Great viewing right here as "Abandoned" profiles dirt tracks that are no longer in operation and some of the ones from the Carolina dirt belt that are still in use today. Featured footage/stories are from Cherokee, Metrolina, Harris, Cleveland County and Mountain View. The period from 1955-2005 saw a dirt track in almost every county throughout upstate SC and the foothills of NC heading towards Georgia. Economics dictated that supply and demand forced many of them to close over the years. And there are lessons to be learned from the tracks that are now "ghosts" on satellite images. There's a story about North Wilkesboro too for asphalt fans. Take some time and check this out, you'll be glad you did!

I can remember being a kid growing up in this area and going to a lot of these tracks. Every weekend there was a big special someplace. Sad to see places like Riverside, Westminster, Metrolina, the original "Smoky Mountain Speedway" near Cherokee, NC, I-85 Speedway, Fountain Inn and so on. There were just too many for the population and driver pool to handle. But it is great to see Mountain View reopened and Ray Cook's success with his Tri County Race track.
